Following the official launch of the negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the EU and the Kingdom of Thailand in March 2013, Thai officials and EU negotiators are meeting this week (16-20 September) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to conduct a second round of negotiation of a trade agreement that both parties want to achieve in as little as 18 months.

22 août 2007On July 18th 2007, the European Commisoner for Trade wrote a letter to the
governement of Thailand to criticize its access to medicines policy through
compulsory licenses. After being put to pressure by the US drug giant Abbott
Laboratories, Thailand now has to face the pressure of the European Union.The Trade Commissioner’s letter effects a sharp rewrite of actual
international law provisions on access to generic medicines, and expresses
threats against Thailand - all in the interest of the patent-based
pharmaceutical industry, and in complete disregard for the human
consequences of hampering access to affordable lifesaving medication. -

After four years of secret negotiations on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) by the European Commission, the EU Parliament will finally be able to take position and vote on the agreement that threatens access to medicine for millions of people living with HIV all over the world.
ACTA establishes a confusion between legitimate high-quality generics and counterfeit medicines and allows their seizure and destruction. It will jeopardize the procurement of cheap generic drugs (...) -

Pression de la Commission Européenne sur la Thaïlande : Mandelson sacrifie les malades
22 août 2007Le 18 juillet dernier, le commissaire européen au commerce Peter Mandelson écrivait au gouvernement de Thaïlande pour désapprouver l’émission de licences obligatoires. Après les pressions d’Abbott, la Thaïlande doit donc maintenant faire face à la Commission européenne qui n’hésite pas à réécrire le droit international pour menancer le gouvernement de Bangkok et sacrifier les malades aux intérêts de l’industrie pharmaceutique.
